About Us

The R. W. Mercer Company was established in 1960. Robert W. Mercer, our founder, recognized that gas station proprietors had a need for skilled help in maintaining their pumps, vehicle hoists, lube equipment, air compressors, etc., and set about to provide such a service for Michigan's Jackson and Hillsdale County areas. In a very short time the area came to rely on Bob's competence and concern, and he brought his son Kirk into the business to assist him. Together they expanded the company to include wholesale and retail sales, excavation, and installation and service of petroleum equipment, and it became obvious that additional employees were necessary to properly care for the increasing customer base.

The growth continued, and in 1976 the company was incorporated. Three years later, a fully staffed branch office was opened in Galesburg, Michigan, providing better, faster, and less expensive service to Southwestern Lower Michigan. Both the Jackson and Galesburg offices continued steady growth and moved to newer and larger facilities in 1986 and 1989 respectively, with the Galesburg branch relocating to Kalamazoo. Continued growth was responsible for the opening of still another fully staffed branch in the Grand Rapids area in 1990, further increasing our area of service to include the entire State of Michigan. In 1997 our Saginaw branch experienced rapid growth into a full serivce branch making it necessary to relocate to a larger facility. The next step was to Detroit, where a new ground-up facility was constructed in 1998. The Kalamazoo office moved to a newly remodeled facility in Portage and the Jackson main office was remodeled, both in 1998. In 2000 we expanded beyond the borders of Michigan. With the award of Gilbarco's sales territories of Fort Wayne/Northern Indiana, and Toledo/Northern Ohio our sales focus has expanded to the tri state area. Our continued growth has been steady and motivated by a desire to provide full service to every customer in each area.

2000 also saw the growth of R. W. Mercer's General Construction operations from a department to a division housed in it's own new facility on the R. W. Mercer Corporate Campus. 2001 began with the aquisition of the Hale Company in Gaylord, Michigan. This has given us a base of operations to better extend out services to the Northern Michigan Market.

The R. W. Mercer Company is comprised of highly skilled and dedicated professionals in their fields. General contracting personnel are skilled and experienced in numerous areas. Petroleum Construction employees, both supervisory and labor, are factory-trained in many areas and have years of experience building fuel dispensing systems. Service Technicians are factory-trained by such reputable manufacturers as Gilbarco, Verifone, Dresser-Wayne, Veeder-Root, AutoGas, PetroVend, and Red Jacket, and have years of experience troubleshooting and repairing fueling systems and electronic equipment of all types. Managers and administrators company-wide support the corporate concept that the R. W. Mercer Company exists and grows because we consistently:

  • meet the needs of our customers in providing competent guidance through the myriad of changing rules and regulations
  • offer merchandise and service of only the highest quality
  • provide our customers with a professionally built, on time, environmentally safe, aesthetically appealing completed project.

The future of the R. W. Mercer Company will be determined by how capably we can anticipate the needs of our customers in a dynamic marketplace. Corporate philosophy will keep us on the forefront of the latest technology, state-of-the-art equipment, and practical applications to bring customers closer to the best possible utilization of their assets. From the ground up, we look forward to a continued pursuit of excellence in serving both the General Contracting and Petroleum industries.

General Construction

After thirty years of serving the petroleum industry, the R. W. Mercer Company responded to customer wishes and formed a General Construction Department in 1991. The plan was to supply turnkey solutions to the petroleum industry by combining the newly formed General Construction Department's services with the Mercer's existing petroleum equipment and construction services, mutually sharing a vision to:

  • Offer the best complete service to our existing petroleum based customers.
  • Expand the same quality services beyond the petroleum market to the diverse range of businesses throughout the Midwest.

With this plan in mind, the Construction Department set out to accomplish the goals. We quickly established a reputation as a leader in quality construction and grew beyond the construction of convenience stores to include commercial, retail, professional and industrial facilities such as warehouses, manufacturing facilities, office buildings, grocery stores, shipping centers, truck and travel plazas, shopping centers, and many other types of projects.

The rapid growth and unwavering standards of the General Construction Department called for the addition of new services to further solidify our position as an industry leader. We began offering design-build services as well as packaged solutions, encouraging our construction customers to turn to us as a single source to take their projects from concept to completion. This addition of services brought further growth that resulted in the formation of a new division and the construction of a separate facility for itself in the R. W. Mercer Corporate Complex.

While constantly striving to grow by providing customers with the highest value through traditional and innovatively new construction methods, R. W. Mercer expects a future of growth, expansion, and satisfied customers.
